John is a very experienced senior rolling stock engineer and now has strong involvement in the heritage railway movement.

John’s background:

In 1958 John joined the railway as a craft mechanical apprentice in Doncaster works. From 1959 he became an Engineering Apprentice and received training at many locations around the Eastern Region of British Railways. After his initial appointment as a draughtsman in the Carriage & Wagon Drawing Office at Doncaster Works, he gained further experience in a variety of roles, becoming Overhead Line Equipment Design Engineer and then Area Maintenance Engineer for the Great Northern Suburban services, based at Hornsey. John moved to InterCity services, first as Depot Engineer at Bounds Green then Area Fleet Manager in Bristol and later became Project Manager (Fleet) in the private sector company Great Western Holdings.

John has retired from full time railway work and volunteers on the West Somerset Railway as manager of the diesel division, a separate small charity the Diesel and Electric Preservation Group and as manager of the railway’s special events team.
